The desk mat size guide.

A desk mat is a large, flat pad that covers most of your desk surface and gives your keyboard and mouse a single, consistent area to sit on. Think of it as the rug of the desk: it draws a clear zone, protects the surface underneath, and pulls your whole setup together into one considered scene.

You will see the same product sold under a few names, desk mat, desk pad, and large mouse pad. They all describe the same thing: an oversized mat that doubles as a full-width mouse surface.

A standard mouse pad covers just enough space for your mouse. A desk mat is essentially a large mouse pad scaled up to cover the area in front of you, so both your keyboard and mouse sit on the same surface.

Why people switch to a desk mat:

• One continuous, cloth-smooth surface for the mouse, with far more room to move.
• It protects the desk from scratches, spills, keyboard feet and wear.
• It tidies the setup visually, the keyboard, mouse and desk read as one piece.
• It is the cheapest way to restyle a whole desk without buying new furniture.

If you only ever move a mouse, a small pad is fine. If you want a tidier, better-looking and better-protected desk, a desk mat is the upgrade.

Most quality desk mats come in a couple of standard sizes. The right one depends on your desk width and what you keep on the surface.

A quick rule of thumb

• Desk 120 cm wide or narrower, or a tighter setup: go Medium.
• Desk 140 cm or wider, or you run a full-size keyboard plus a laptop: go Large.
• When you are between sizes, size up, a mat that is slightly too big always looks more intentional than one that is too small.

Day to day, wipe it with a damp cloth. For a deeper clean, most quality mats (including ours) are machine washable on a cold, gentle cycle, then air-dried flat. Avoid wringing, ironing or tumble drying, which can damage the rubber base.
